Firm in Boulder wholesales
Antarctic krill as supplement

With only three employees Azantis LLC has
achieved profitability and annual revenues exceeding $1 million. John Schoonbrood, the company’s Netherlands-born president
who is bootstrapping the firm, believes it has the potential
to generate $100 million in annual revenues.
Azantis wholesales krill oil, a dietary supplement that delivers
Omega-3 fatty acids. “This is a niche market now, but it’s on the
verge of going mainstream,” Schoonbrood said.
He estimated that the Omega-3 market is growing 35 percent
to 40 percent annually.
Omega-3 fatty acids have demonstrated benefits related
to heart disease, blood sugar, brain health and inflammation,
noted Eileen Faughey of Nutrition Connections in Boulder.
Certain fish as well as some nuts and plants are natural sources
of Omega-3s.
While fish oil has long been recognized as an Omega-3 supplement,
Faughey has recently seen increasing scientific interest in
krill oil. The Omega-3 fatty acids is this oil is absorbed by the
body more efficiently.
According to its producers, krill oil also delivers beneficial
antioxidants that fish oil lacks.
Krill are the small marine crustaceans that give salmon and
lobster — as well as flamingos — their distinctive colorations.
In the Antarctic, krill feed on minute aquatic plants and in turn
provide food for fish, penguins, seals and whales.
Quebec-based Neptune Technologies and Bioresources Inc.
recently announced agreements to make capsules of its NKO
Krill Oil available through Costco Wholesale Corp. and Walgreens,
the largest retail pharmacy chain in the United States.
In addition to Neptune, industry leaders include Aker Biomarine
ASA of Norway, which recently shifted its focus from fish
oil to krill oil.
“We’re not trying to take market share from others,” Schoonbrood
said. “Larger players will expand the market. We’ll take a
slice of an ever-larger pie.” Read More
